It seems what used to be attributed as some sort of creepy fetish has finally gone mainstream.
Heath Ledger wins Academy award in Dark Knight
TV shows such as Chuck and Big Bang Theory
Comic conventions being held in major trade centers rather than middle school gyms
Every known celebrity claiming they're "a nerd" or that they love comics
Accessible video games such as Rock Band and Brick Breaker

Time to set the line straight. I am going to finally define the term Nerd.
Being a nerd is a lifestyle, not a pleasure. Finding pleasure in any given thing such as unrealesed indi mix-tapes or toys with kung-fu grip does not necessarily effect your lifestyle, so it does not make you a nerd. Now, once your item of interest begins to change how you spend your week, then you're a nerd. For instance one may read comics. However, until they plan their week around going to the nerd store every Wednesday when new comics come out and have a portion of their house devoted to the storage of past purchases, they are not a nerd. The same goes for all fields of nerdy interest. Video game nerds or "gamers" as they prefer to be called, will devote their time to researching each game months before it comes out, will not be satisfied with the purchase of one system, but must have them all, and will plan their lives around having time to "finish the level".

Any other stereotypes are just that. Not all nerds are antisocial, in fact I have found most love the chance to interact with those of similar interests. Many wash regularly. Some even mange to get laid every once in a while.

Now, the next question, why? Why sacrifice so much time, energy and money to support what is a borderline drug particularly since their are so many stigmas attached to the lifestyle? Because seeing Batman punch Superman in the face with a Kryptonite ring is awesome.
