Itstherub.com has put together a best-of-the-year mixtape for every year since 1979. Aside from providing soooo much bomb music to listen to and a great cover to almost every year, these posts are snapshots that chronicle 31 years of history. Being a nerd (those of you lucky enough to have seen my album cover time-line already know), I put all the tracklists into an excel document so I could look at them next to each other. You can see it here, thanks to the magic of Google Docs. Basically, it's real fun to just look at the interweaving stories told here; the ways backpack rap and gangster rap co-existed in the early 90s, the dominance of Def Jam in the mid '80s, OutKast, Ludacris, Mystikal and 3-6 Mafia's dominance of the year 2000, and the subsequent increase of marketshare from the dirty souf; all the way to the fact that Jay-Z has a track in every year since 95, save 2004; etc. etc.
Please leave any thoughts of note as you enjoy history
